Hey, Panda here! I identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns. I am fundraising for the partial costs of my top surgery.
Why do a fundraiser? There are personal financial reasons, but what really prompted me is the injustice of trans and gender diverse health care. Surgeon costs are way above what Medicare covers and yet we still need their services. Ideally, I would like to see Medicare or health insurance reform, but until then I’m reaching out to friends and family.
A bit about me: I was first able to find language around my gender maybe 14 years ago. Back then I described myself as “both and neither”. I never thought I fit the trans narrative, I didn’t identify as a man. As our language evolved it became easier and easier to talk about my gendered experiences. At the same time, the older and older I got, the more my body has deviated from my gender. I have thought at length and chosen the path of surgery to more closely align my sex, with my gender.
All funds will be put towards the surgeons fees. After Medicare these come to $6957, this does not include the anaesthetist or other medical support staff.
I am asking for support because trans and gender diverse health care should be more accessible and affordable. But, also because I have been unable to work since October when my mum died. I’m not comfortable asking for help, preferring the giving role, rather than the receiving. And, at the same time, I’m trying to convince myself that I am also worthy of support.
Thinking of u Panda, have a good op xx
