About

The YWCA in Solomon Islands is undertaking the publication of a children's picture book based on a local folktale written in English and local language and illustrated by a talented Solomon Islands artist with the aim of fostering literacy by making it accessible to children throughout the country.

A similar project was initiated and developed by YWCA Solomon Islands in 2011 through the support of a former Australian Volunteer on assignment to the YWCA Kindergarten as a curriculum development advisor. The book produced, sold and distributed at the time was a story about how a parrot and a blackbird got their colours and entitled 'Kekero and Kwadu'.

Funds were raised to produce 2000 copies of the books enabling free distribution to Kindergartens throughout the country as well as local libraries. The books were also sold at an affordable price to primary schools and local families with all sale profits supporting and sustaining the YWCA Kindergarten - also the oldest early childhood facility in Solomon Islands.

The project started due to an awareness of lack of printed material for children, either in English or local language. A print-rich environment in an early childhood setting is of paramount importance to language and literacy development. Reading attractively illustrated stories to children encourages print awareness and language development, particularly if in their language of primary exposure.

The culture in the Solomon Islands is extremely rich in oral tradition and there is scope for many more folktales to be printed and illustrated by talented local artists while also preserving them for future generations. 'Kekero and Kwadu' was an example of what can be achieved and an important step in that direction.

Earlier this year the development of a second picture book based on another folktale, that like 'Kekero and Kwadu' was originally told by the now deceased YWCA matron Alice Baekalia, was initiated.

This second ‘Kastom Stori’ or folktale for YWCA Kindy entitled 'The Dragonfly and The Firefly' is in three languages and illustrated by popular Honiara artist Riaz Haikiu Maninga.

Funds have been raised locally for all fees associated with the development of the picture book such as artist commission fees and text translation fees.

With a draft manuscript now completed, funds still need to be raised to print and ship 2000-2500 copies on behalf of YWCA Solomon Islands.

For every AUD$40 donation you can receive a copy of the book and ensure the printing of about 15 more books that will go into the hands of Solomon Islands children.

All remaining profits from the sale of the books will go to the YWCA Kindergarten to support them in continuing to provide a quality early childhood environment for many Solomon Island families.

Thank you for supporting this valuable cause to promote literacy for all children in Solomon Islands. Please feel free to share this page.
