Central Queensland is the centre of Australia’s beef industry and has an area of 890,000 square kilometres extending from the far west to the coast. This area has been suffering from the drought since 2012.
In many properties must sell cattle or shoot their cattle as they are too weak to travel which also resulted in numerous suicides. Many towns in our area are now preparing for the day they will completely run out of water. Some towns have already declared they have no water and they are trucking in water, and several are digging deep wells, searching for underground water sources. Many farmers are feeling the pressure of the drought; mental health has been a major focus of Rotary for the far west. This money will provide food and fodder to cattle in order for them to survive. Without such assistance we could see the end of the beef industry.
It is important to note that there are no administration fees as this is a Rotary project and all funds go to the purchase of food for stock.
