About

Lights Out And Dance is proud to be supporting the Association of Veteran Surfers with 100% of profits from both LOAD sessions this ANZAC week will be donated to the Association of Veteran Surfers (AVS).

AVS was established right here on the Gold Coast by two wonderful young veterans, Matt & Keiran to provide a fun and healthy platform to connect veterans and support them through surf and ocean therapy. In addition to veterans, AVS has worked with the ADF to provide some current serving members with a fun healthy activity immediately on return from deployment.

Both Matt & Keiran have both experienced the unique stress and challenges of a military career, as well as the difficulties of transitioning from military service to civilian life. It was this that led them to create AVS and provide veterans who might be struggling with PTSD and other effects of their service with the mateship and camaraderie that is often lost post discharge.

LOAD is hoping to raise $500 with the funds raised supporting AVS to host a surfing development day for their members at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre with the support of the team from Surfing Australia.

There are many aspects to surfing that serving members can relate too. Surfers are out in the elements against the odds, constantly observing their surroundings and always looking out for their mates. Out in the surf, veterans are able to have fun in a relaxed environment that takes their mind off life’s pressures.

The Association of Veteran Surfers is a Surfing Queensland affiliated Boardriders club founded by veterans with the vision of a healthy and active suicide free veteran community. We hope to achieve this through building a strong veteran community based around surfing and mateship.

Ocean Therapy utilises surfing and social participation to create a renewed sense of self-efficacy in veterans and increased belief in oneself to reintegrate into civilian life.

With the support of Surfing Queensland and Surfing Australia, AVS hopes to reach more veterans and introduce them to benefits of surf and ocean therapy by providing them with opportunities to connect with other veterans in the community and get involved in development opportunities at the Hurley Surfing Performance Centre.

Please note, AVS does not have DGR status, therefore, donations are not tax deductible.
