On the 23rd of February (my 27th birthday), I will be physically silent for 24 hours, to raise awareness and much needed funds for victims of domestic violence. This means not one word will come out of my mouth for the entire day of my birthday, you can all now breathe a sigh of relief!
This will be the first time I embark on this self-imposed challenge and I am going to make sure it's a successful one for a cause that is close to my heart.
On average at least one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia. Intimate partner violence contributes to more death, disability and illness in women aged 15 to 44 than any other preventable risk factor.
For male victims, assaults by wives and girlfriends are often ignored by police and media.
Millions of men and women are victims of domestic violence across the world, and due to fear and victim shaming each gender struggle to have their voices heard.
Funds will be donated to two charities, Domestic Violence Victoria (DV Vic) and Emerge Women & Children's Support Network.
DV Vic is the peak body for family violence services in Victoria. Their mission is to lead the Victorian community in building safer lives for those that are experiencing or at risk of violence.
Emerge supports women and children who have experienced domestic violence, enabling them to break the cycle of violence and rebuild their lives.
Donors will have a choice of who their money will go to.
Thank you very much for visiting my fundraising page. I hope that you can help me break the silence on domestic violence.
