HOORAY FOR HUDSON

I am the proud Mum of Hudson, my gorgeous 3 year old boy. Hudson suffered a hypoxic brain injury (lack of oxygen) while in the womb (at 30 weeks gestation) and the Doctors worked quickly to deliver Hudson and resuscitate him. His lungs were damaged and he suffered from Chronic Neonatal Lung Disease requiring home oxygen for 15months. At six months of age Hudson was diagnosed with quadriplegic spastic/dystonic Cerebral Palsy. We are looking for help to provide him with a wheelchair and other essential equipment and therapy.

Hudson is an extremely bright little boy with a gorgeous smile that captures everyone’s heart. He loves Sesame Street, reading books, listening to music and singing (especially Ed Sheeran – Thinking out Loud). He shows no signs of cognitive impairment but has been diagnosed with a significant speech delay. His respiratory condition and subsequent hospitalisations have led to social isolation and contributed to his developmental and physical delays.

Hudson is just learning to sit for short periods and is now starting to be able to use his hands to play while sitting. He cannot move himself in and out of sitting or independently reposition himself. This is what we are currently working hard towards achieving in therapy. The only way Hudson can move around independently is to drag himself on his tummy with his arms.
Giving Hudson a wheelchair would mean he can independently move around and interact with his peers and be included in activities he is currently excluded from. This in turn will help his social development and aid with his speech delay.

A wheelchair is going to cost $8000. I also need to purchase a walking frame for him to continue to strive towards the ultimate goal of walking and a number of pieces of equipment for the bathroom and toilet so that we can also work towards Hudson being continent and using the toilet. Hudson needs regular physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and hydrotherapy to continue to work towards reaching developmental milestones and ultimately independence. Over the next year I will have at least $8000 of out of pocket therapy expenses due to limited government funding for therapy.
