Lymphoedema is the term given to swelling resulting from malfunction of the lymphatic system. It affects people of all ages, whether as a result of underdeveloped lymphatics, or due to damage to the lymph system from cancer treatment or trauma. Lymphoedema impacts adversely on the physical, emotional, social and financial wellbeing of people living with the condition.
The Lymphoedema Association Australia's mission is to ensure people living with lymphoedema get the information, treatment and support they need to live well. Our goals are to provide advocacy, support, education and to raise awareness of lymphoedema.
*****
Receiving a diagnosis of a condition you hadn't previously heard of or knew anything about is overwhelming, scary and deeply isolating.
On top of this, when the road to that diagnosis is unclear, uncertain, and long, the experience can be traumatic.
Unravelling the options for ongoing treatment for a life-long condition can lead to dead-ends, detours and bumpy roads.
And while this is a common experience for many people living with lymphoedema - it doesn't have to be.
If fact, we are determined to turn this experience on its head, and provide the information, connection and support people living with lymphoedema need - we should know, we are a community of people with lived experience who have walked this path.
We are committed to ensuring that no one walks their lymphoedema journey alone.
And we will work to ensure that everyone's path is paved with community awareness, treatment options and support from the community and health system alike - so everyone can live their best life.
We're the Lymphoedema Association Australia and we are here with you.
Every step of the way.
