Headstart is a specialist service supporting the choices and independence of people with an acquired brain injury (ABI) who live in the Hunter and Central Coast. The organisation started back in 1987 and is a not for profit organisation and a registered charity.
Brain Injury is complex and can challenge every aspect of your life - movement, talking, thinking and feeling. Even though every person may be impacted differently by their brain injury, the barriers and the invisible nature of the injury make getting back into life challenging. People who have had an acquired brain injury may experience difficulties that impede their re-involvement in their local community and find a lifestyle that is personally satisfying. We provide long term support and create opportunities for successful community involvement
Our individual supports with trained support workers assist people to get back into community life, follow their goals or dreams and live as independently as possible. Our aim is for people to move ahead in their lives in dealing with the impacts of brain injury no matter the cause of their injury. (ie stroke, trauma, tumours, neurological issues etc)
Headstart works out with the person how they would like their supports to be designed around their individual needs and choice. We provide an environment where people can develop confidence, find their abilities and life skills. We are committed to providing individually tailored and long term support to assist the person develop independence in life skills, create life choices and increase their community involvement in a manner of their choice.
Also the Headstart Community Education Team lectures to schools & organisation in the community about increasing the awareness of Acquired Brain Injury and its major causes such as road accidents, tumours, stroke, sporting accidents, virus and industrial accidents. Our aim is to also work towards preventing this devastating and life changing injury in our community and our commitment to community education is resolute.
We seek any donation towards this effort and your contribution can go a long way to educate the community & hopefully reduce the incidence of this injury in the region.
