The Great Barrier Reef is Australia’s unique living icon.

It’s the largest living structure on Earth, with rich corals spanning an area larger than New Zealand and visible from space.

The Reef is a unique ecosystem; home to thousands of species of marine life, including fish, whales, dolphins, and six of the world’s seven species of marine turtle.

It’s no surprise this unparalleled beauty is one of the seven natural wonders of the world,
has earned World Heritage status and attracts two million visitors every year.
The Reef is an irreplaceable global icon.

But our Reef is coming under increasing pressure from a growing combination of manmade and natural threats.

A changing climate and rising water temperatures, poorer water quality from sediment run-off and pollution, as well as more severe cyclones and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, are just some of the threats creating a perfect storm for our Reef and the marine life that depends on it.

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is saving our Reef and all its living diversity for future
generations.

We’re using independent science to better understand the true condition of the Reef and the challenges it faces so we know where to focus our efforts. We inform and educate people on what needs to be done to address the causes of the problem, including advising governments and industry.

And we raise funds to take practical action, funding hard work and innovative technologies from the best minds in Australia and beyond to protect and restore the Reef.

Together we’re making progress, but there’s a lot more to do. The challenge is so great that we all need to take action, and that’s why we need your help.
