Liver Kids Australia is the only Australian charity to focus on liver disease in children. Unlike many other children's health issues, liver disease has a relatively low profile, however, over 100 different liver diseases can affect children with many of these leading to cirrhosis. Approximately 1 in 10,000 children are born each year with a liver disease, the most common being Biliary Atresia, an aggressive disease, with no known cause, responsible for 60% of all paediatric liver transplants.
Founded in mid-2013, Liver Kids aims to facilitate education, information sharing and research into causes, treatment and care to achieve better outcomes for children with liver disease.
We work with various organisations, such as DonateLife, to promote awareness of childhood liver disease and liver transplant.
We connect member families with others who are sharing, or have been through, similar experiences.
We are developing an Australian Jaundice Guideline for healthcare professionals to help diagnose liver disease in newborns.
We are developing a series of reference flyers covering medical, lifestyle, health and wellbeing issues for children with liver disease and their families.
We maintain links with relevant international organisations to provide up to date information on childhood liver diseases.
We provide a limited number of financial grants for member families in need.
Liver Kids Australia was founded by two families whose daughters are liver transplant recipients. As the charity is relatively new, all of the work involved in running Liver Kids is done on a volunteer basis and all funds raised are channeled back into developing resources and activities for our members as well as advocating for awareness about liver disease and organ transplants in children.
By fundraising for Liver Kids Australia you will help us:
Raise community and corporate awareness of the existence and impact of childhood liver disease.
Build a better support network for families and children.
Develop education programs targeting healthcare practitioners about the recognition and management of childhood liver diseases.
Contribute to medical research into causes and treatments.
