Supporters of Cancer (SOC) is a not for profit organisation formed in Newcastle in the Hunter Region of NSW Australia in August 2010 by a group of family, friends and colleagues of Gary and Sharon Considine, in acknowledgment of their courageous journeys though Ovarian and Melanoma Cancer.
The SOC Committee raise funds for support services for ovarian and melanoma cancer patients and their families, with all funds to be distributed locally in the Hunter Region. SOC is also committed to promoting awareness of Cancer throughout all of our activities and events, with a particular focus on Ovarian and Melanoma Cancer.
Since it's establishment, SOC has raised over $250,000 from donations, biennial Charity Balls, Annual Charity Golf Days, Afternoon Teas and various other events. The money raised has gone towards practical assistance for patients with ovarian and melanoma cancer in the Hunter Region. Some of the contributions SOC have made include a partnership with Port Waratah Coal Services to provide seed funding for the first Oncology Nurse Practitioner in Newcastle, donations to the Hunter Melanoma Foundation for education and awareness raising programs, sponsorship of training for local nurses and the sponsorship of an annual Patient Care Day.
