National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to protect, connect and restore the integrity and diversity of natural systems in NSW and beyond, through national parks, marine sanctuaries and other means.
NPA has played a role in the establishment of many of New South Wales national parks and nature reserves. Today there are 877 protected areas covering 7 million hectares on the land (9% of the State) and 66,000 ha of marine waters (6.5% of the coast), far exceeding the goals of our founders. New South Wales is one of the most environmentally diverse areas on earth and NPA works hard to ensure it remains this way.
We are fortunate to still have rainforests, deserts, mangrove swamps, eucalypt forests, alpine herb fields, coastal heaths and grasslands. National parks and other protected areas will be increasingly important as the primary means of ensuring our core natural places are safeguarded for generations to come. Yet with only 9% of our state protected, many significant areas remain unprotected, leaving our natural heritage and its biodiversity facing growing threats from humanity. These threats include habitat destruction, human-induced climate change, invasive species, mining and gas extraction, pollution, residential, industrial and agricultural development and population growth.
NPA has been established as a conservation organisation for nearly 60 years. We have a network of 16 branches State-wide, hundreds of active volunteers and over 20,000 supporters.
