In memory of his late wife Skye, Cameron Nugent, a resident of Lorne, is set to undertake a challenging 150km run from Pharan, Melbourne, to Lorne, where he recently completed building their dream house. This inspiring journey, starting tomorrow, aims to raise over $100,000 for cancer research, honoring the memory of Skye who battled breast cancer.
Skye's last wish was for her husband, Cameron, to build their dream home—a task he bravely accepted despite having no prior experience in construction. The project, which Cameron took on single-handedly, became a testament to his love and resilience. Over eight years, he overcame numerous challenges, including learning new skills like welding and bricklaying, and enduring hardships like sleeping in his car.
Now, as the house stands completed, Mr. Nugent has chosen to embark on this grueling run, symbolising the struggles his wife endured during her cancer battle. “Running 150km is nothing compared to the battle Skye faced with cancer. This run, though challenging, is my way of celebrating her life and legacy”, Mr. Nugent said to the Surf Coast Times.
The "To Lorne with Love" campaign has already garnered impressive support, raising over $50,000 in donations. Nugent expresses gratitude for the overwhelming community support and the encouragement from Sam Johnson of Love Your Sister, a cancer advocacy organisation.
Reflecting on the dual accomplishment of completing the house and preparing for the run, Cameron shares, “This is more than a physical challenge; it's a journey of love and remembrance. Skye always encouraged me to embrace life and our dreams. I hope this house and my efforts in fundraising will make her proud.”
The community has rallied around Mr. Nugent's cause, with many expressing admiration for his determination and his commitment to raising awareness and funds for cancer research.
