Time to help Maureen and her horses

Animal Fundraising

MAUREEN McCann lost everything in a house fire at Roadvale last week but now a caring community is rallying to assist her.

Ms McCann escaped with just the clothes she was wearing and her mobile phone after the blaze destroyed her home. All she has left are her precious horses.

But a "my cause" site has been set up where people can donate directly to assist Ms McCann get back on her feet.

Boonah community nurse Christine Maroni has also set up a Facebook page that tells Ms McCann's story and has a link to the "my cause" site.

Ms Maroni is also handling the donations of furniture and household items.

"Maureen is a very kind lady who will do anything for everybody," Ms Maroni said.

"But she is a quiet lady and not into fuss, and that is why she hesitated with me taking on this fund-raising activity, along with one of her friends.

"She has got her horses there on the property, but nothing else.

"The house is completely gone.

"She left the house with a dressing gown and a pair of shoes, and that is it. But she got out within seconds of her life, so it is extraordinary she is even here."

Ms McCann needs enough funds to build a shed or shelter for a caravan, or temporary accommodation so she can be with her horses as soon as possible.

"It's soul destroying if you can't be where your home is, and Maureen loves her horses," Ms Maroni said.

"Maureen is a special lady. It is a privilege to be able to help her."

Ms Maroni said the funds donated to the "my cause" site go directly into an account linked to Ms McCann's account.

Ms McCann, a fit lady in her early 60s, has a daughter who lives in Western Australia and she has flown over to be with her mother.
