Williamstown resident Dean Landy has set off on his latest endeavor, the Run from Poverty (RFP) marathon in Kenya. Departing on July 3, Landy will spend eight action-packed days participating in a fundraising marathon aimed at combating poverty overseas.
Landy, the chief executive and founder of One Heart, a non-profit organisation that coordinates the run in Kenya, has been organising the RFP event since 2015. This year, 15 individuals from Australia, including 14 from Melbourne, are taking part in the fundraising run for this important cause.
The RFP marathon is not a traditional race with prizes and is not secluded to a specific group; instead it welcomes participation from schools, locals, and other athletes. Participants have the option to select a distance that challenges them, ranging from 10 kilometers up to a full marathon of 42 kilometers.
Following the marathon, a grand community party is held, with this year's guest of honor being Kenya's first lady and the local governor.
The funds raised through the event directly support One Heart's mission to empower vulnerable children, enabling them to reach their full potential and break free from the cycle of poverty.
“One heart is directly caring for nearly 250 kids who have previously been facing extreme poverty, but are now part of the loving one heart family.” Mr. Landy said to Star Weekly.
The funds raised will be allocated toward enhancing educational facilities at the One Heart school, allowing them to accommodate more students. Additionally, the funds will provide essential resources such as nutritious food, healthcare, and clothing for all the children under their care.
