When Angus Catt suffered severe injuries while travelling overseas, friends and family of the 26 year-old immediately set up a mycause fundraising page to help bring him home and cover mounting medical costs.
Angus was travelling in Seoul, South Korea with his brother Will when he fell from the rooftop of a four-storey building on January 22.
Angus sustained significant chest and brain injuries and was placed into an induced coma.
His family and close friends had to appeal to their wider network for “assistance in supporting Angus' medical costs.”
“Angus’s family is now facing expensive medical evacuation and Korean hospitalisation costs of well over $320,000 after his travel insurance company rejected his claim due to not spending $250 on his credit card on pre-travel expenses,” the fundraising page reads.
More than 2600 donations and well wishes poured in, raising almost $280,000 in just three weeks of launching the page.
Family and friends were quick to help out. In a Facebook post on Thursday 2 February, Angus’ mother Sally thanked donors who helped raise more than $200,000 in just a week.
“I know this is happening because of this huge worldwide support and love, thank you from the bottom of our hearts to absolutely everyone who has sent this to my boy,” she wrote.
Members of the young man’s family and his girlfriend had rushed to Angus’ side in Seoul where he was in critical care and in need of further specialist treatment.
Angus Catt works as a carer for those on the NDIS. His family describe him as an “infectious” and “larger-than-life character”.
Before being able to leave Korea, Angus needed to be able to breathe independently and was having his medications slowly decreased.
He responded well and is now back home in Australia where specialist care and treatment continues.
