MEDIA: Swimming Across Darwin Harbour

Susan Wells passed away after a battle with breast cancer in March 2017, although he knows it won’t bring her back, her brother Michael wanted to raise money for National Breast Cancer Foundation by swimming the six kilometres across Darwin Harbour.

At 7am on Sunday the 24th of June, Susan’s birthday, Michael dived in to the possibly crocodile infested, freezing cold, choppy water of Darwin Harbour. Escorted by two kayaks and an escort vessel, with professional crocodile spotters on board, Michael completed the swim using breaststroke, approximately three hours later, becoming the first person to swim the harbour.

Michael received overwhelming support for both his swim and his cause, having raised over $15,500 in under a month, far exceeding Michael’s expectations, as well as the $10,000 goal he had set for his mycause campaign.

All the money raised is going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to fund life changing breast cancer research that Michael hopes will lead to better diagnosis, management, and treatment for women suffering from breast cancer, so they can live better lives than Susan had, and so their families can have more time with them.
