On Saturday the 21st of July, at 3pm, a group of people swarmed the field at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle for Got Your Back Sista. The half time celebrations at the Newcastle Knight game showed solidarity against domestic violence in the community.
Got Your Back Sista provides benevolent relief to women and children escaping domestic violence and are at risk of living below the poverty line. Their vision is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of domestic violence.
On the day about 400 people wearing ‘Say No’ T-shirts marched onto the field while a video and anthem are played. The purpose was to engage the Hunter community in the campaign, and raise money for the cause.
One woman from the Hunter community who had personally experienced domestic abuse and has now overcome it, shared her story with the Herald, and although she wished to remain anonymous, her story opened many eyes and acted as a beacon of hope for other women who are currently in a bad situation.
You can read the woman’s story here, and although the event has passed, you can still donate to Got Your Back Sista on the mycause event page.
