On July 9, 2023, the Penny Marathon, a unique event focused on promoting awareness and raising funds for stray animals, is returning for its 12th year and will be taking place in Sydney.

The marathon, unlike conventional races, is free to join. Participants are encouraged to contribute to the cause by making donations that will be used primarily to fund sterilisation procedures for stray animals. The aim is to control the growing stray population in Greece, especially in more rural regions.

The Penny Marathon began its journey in Athens in 2012, inspired by the tragic story of a stray dog named Penny. Over the years, it has blossomed into a global phenomenon, happening in parallel in cities like Athens, Kalamata, various locations in Germany, and later in the year in Sydney, Australia.

Participants in the event do more than just run. The marathon is a showcase of resilience, where participants walk, swim, bike, and even climb to demonstrate their commitment to the cause. The multi-faceted event is designed to mirror the daily struggles of stray animals and to symbolise the lengths that the volunteers go to improve their lives.

While there are no official numbers on the scale of the stray animal problem in Greece, estimates suggest there could be as many as three million stray animals struggling to survive on the country's streets.

The Penny Marathon has made a significant impact over the years. In 2022 alone, donations from the marathon and other sources enabled the sterilisation of approximately 25 dogs in the Kalambaka area. Dozens more received crucial medical treatments, and many found their forever homes.

The Penny Marathon is not just a race; it's a movement for change, spreading awareness and rallying support to improve the lives of stray animals in Greece and around the world. Participation and donations will help curb the number of strays and bring them the care they desperately need.
