Many of us only consider the cost of a funeral when we have to say goodbye to a loved one and arrange the funeral. There are a number of items that need to be paid for when organising a funeral, such as flowers, the casket, transportation, the service, burial/cremation fees and the cost of the funeral director. As a result, a funeral can cost anywhere between $4500 to $15,000 depending on the personal requests of the person who has passed away. When a person passes away, their super is paid out to their nominated beneficiaries, who are able to use these funds to cover the funeral costs. In some cases these funds may not be enough, or simply may not exist at all. One way to gather the funds is by creating a memorial fund in the person’s name, giving friends, family and people who knew the person an opportunity to help their family with the costs and support them by contributing to the memorial fund.
