WHEN this year’s Bridge To Bridge Water Ski Classic hits the water at Brooklyn on Sunday, November 9, it will include a special tribute for Sarah Teelow by four of her friends.
Trudi Stout, Emily Rains, Maddy Brien and Ashley Cropper wanted to honour the memory of Sarah, who died after suffering head and spinal injuries in a crash in last year’s event, two months after she had been crowned world champion.
Her friends have organised a fundraiser that will see Emily and Trudi ski the 112km race under extremely challenging conditions. Emily will use a freeboard — which means there are no foot bindings, while Trudi will go one step further by using a fence paling.
Their challenge will raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and The Rehabilitation and Disability Support Network.
“It’s going to be an emotional day but we just wanted to do something and we felt that this was something that Sarah would really appreciate,” Trudi, of Hornsby, said.
“Sarah loved the sport so much and she wouldn’t want to see everyone giving up.
“I don’t think there’s a day that goes by that I don’t think of her. I quite like thinking of her ... I don’t want to lose that connection with Sarah as life goes on.”
The girls have also organised nurses from Donate Life to be at the finish line at Governor Philip Park, Windsor. Sarah was a supporter of Donate Life and saved the lives of six people by donating her organs. The nurses will answer questions about organ donation and how to register.
