In November, Australians came together to support Australian families going through a tough time, with sick children or parents placing significant strain upon the families. Crowdfunding campaigns were set up across the country to give the families some assistance during these heartbreaking times.
Steven Tait is a loving father of two from Charters Towers, Queensland. An unfortunate incident has left Steven fighting for life in hospital, with wife Kylee and their children by his side. The hospital where Steven is recovering from his trauma is 1.5 hours away from home, putting additional strain on the young family during an already difficult time. Close friends of the family launched a mycause campaign to help cover the travel costs for Kylee and their children, with over 1.6 thousand shares. Thanks to the kindness of friends, family and the wider community through support from the Townsville Bulletin, Star & Power Radio and 7 News Townsville, over 250 donations were made and over $30,000 raised to date.
The Kellam family from Melbourne is a warm, caring family who have endured far more than one family ever should. 5 year-old Katie was born with only the right atrium and ventricle of her heart and was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Unfortunately Katie’s last surgery has caused life-threatening complications, leaving her family waiting anxiously for her condition to improve. Katie’s father Geoff has also been diagnosed with a rare stomach cancer. The adeno gastric cancer is already at stage 4, causing Geoff to rely on trial drug Keytruda which isn’t covered by the PBS in this instance. The Kellam family’s story was featuring in 9 News Melbourne, the Herald Sun and the Courier Mail, with 310 donations, 651 shares and over $25,000 raised as part of the Kellam family campaign.
When father of two and former AFL player Quenton was told that he had a lump behind his kidney, he immediately began treatment. A CT scan three months after the discovery showed that the mass was continuing to grow. Quenton is now battling stage 3 testicular cancer, along with cancer in his abdomen and chest. This loving and dedicated father is currently undergoing chemotherapy to beat this heartbreaking diagnosis for his young family.
