Meet the cyclopaths: Manly waiters Tom Bentley and Mark Flynn, who will be pedalling away from Perth on a fundraising ride across the continent on Sunday November 23.
The pair of poms both wait tables at Manly Grill and live at Freshwater. But it was when Mark was working in Perth that he met Cooper Miscall, a nine-year-old with two brain tumours and a rare form of diabetes. Inspired by Cooper’s spirit through five months of chemotherapy and 20 rounds of radiation treatment, Mr Flynn fired off a text.
“Mate, 4000km on bikes from Perth to Sydney, I reckon 14 days, to raise money for this great kid I have met.”
Ten months later and the pair have worked out it will in fact take them five or six weeks and they have added Mr Bentley’s cousin, Jack McNiff, who is nine years old and has Down syndrome, to the cause.
In between work shifts, they have been riding to West Head and Barrenjoey.
Their route from Perth takes the cyclopaths across the Nullabor Plain, through Adelaide, then Mildura and on to Goulburn and the Sydney Opera House.
