CORONA VIRUS - COVID-19 EXPLAINED.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe respiratory diseases.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
Coronavirus knows no borders. It is a global pandemic and our shared humanity demands an Australian and in fact a global response.
THE IMPACT ON OUR HEALTH SYSTEM.

- Cases of COVID-19 were reported across all ages.
- The median age of all cases is 47 years (range: 0 to 100 years).
- The median age of deaths is 80 years (range: 55 to 95 years).
- There is a relatively equal ratio of male-to-female cases across most age groups. The higher proportion of females in the 20 to 29 age group is under investigation, as is the higher proportion of males in the 40 to 49 age group.
- Of cases with a reported place of acquisition over 66% have recent international travel history, including over 1,000 cases associated with cruise ships. It is likely the proportion of imported cases will reduce over the coming weeks as a result of the border restrictions imposed.
- This creates a burden on our health system. You can fundraise in the COVID-19 appeal for your hospital Consider creating a fundraising page and asking your friends, colleagues, clients and family to sponsor you for donations
- To date, over 310,000 tests have been conducted nationally. Of those tests conducted around 2% have been positive.
