MEDIA: Boxer KO's world record for charity

Boxer fundraises for mental health

Port Stephens boxing legend Kurt Aldridge challenged himself earlier this month to set a new world record while raising money for charity.

The 28-year-old father-of-two aimed to raise $10,000 and blitz the boxing record at Next Level Boxing in Salamander Bay on Thursday 2 March, coinciding with national Be Kind Day.

Aldridge planned to box 127 continuous three-minute rounds, with a 60-second rest in between each one, from 9.15am until 6.30pm.

He succeeded in setting a new world record, boxing an amazing 140 consecutive rounds on the day!

His fundraising efforts were also fantastic as the event raised $7,470 for Headspace Newcastle, who provide counselling and support to young people aged 12 to 25.

Aldridge wanted to raise awareness of the local charity and raise funds that would allow the organisation to deliver youth mental health programs to schools in the region.

“...we can teach our youth, parents and educators some valuable lessons.”

With a background in professional football and a degree in Physical Education and Health, Aldridge is currently a strength-and-conditioning coach and trainer.

He is passionate about using his skills to help fundraise for mental health and he has previously raised thousands of dollars participating in the World’s Toughest Workout, the Head Above Water 24-Hour Swimathon and, more recently, a 100km run in 24 hours.

“I’m more than willing to put my body through some physical suffering so other people don’t have to mentally suffer,” Aldridge told Newcastle Weekly.
