Raising funds for: Mark Briggs
Hello! We are trying to fundraise for the Briggs family. Most of the Volleyball community would know, larger than life, Mark Briggs (Briggsy) and his lovely wife, Sammy from Rockhampton. Recently, Briggsy ended up in hospital in very serious condition. He had received THE vaccination and not long after his health severely declined. He was in ICU, Rockhampton Hospital with many serious symptoms ie inflamed heart, fluid on his lungs, pneumonia. He was placed in an induced coma, as the doctors thought he wouldn't make it through the night. He had a machine breathing for him. He wasn't responding to antibiotics. A tube was inserted to suck the fluid out of his lungs. The fluid was around his heart as well. There were negative changes to his liver function. His resting heart rate was up to 150/minute. Fluctuating blood pressure causing concern to his organs shutting down. High temperatures. As his body was shutting down, the Hospital transferred him to the Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside, around 2nd July. Sammy & the kids drove down & have been in booked accommodation. As you can imagine, this is not cheap! He was starting to go into renal failure. Since he has had more CT scans, his marrow tested for lymphoma. As at Friday 9th July, he has not improved. Thursday night, his oxygen levels have decreased, temperature rose along with his white blood cells. He was sedated, as every time they brought him out of sedation, his blood pressure rose! The road to recovery is going to be long and probably with complications arising during the journey. Obviously Briggsy isn't working at present and nor is Sammy. They will run out of money. The strain of the medical side of things is stressful enough, let alone them worrying about money. If everyone who knows him generously gives $5 - $10 (or more if you are able) and those that don't know him $1 - $5 (because giving makes you feel good) we will reach our target before we know it.. maybe even exceed it! Also.. PLEASE share this with all of your friends. The more reach we get, the quicker & more money can be raised. Thank you in advance for your kindness, empathy and generosity. Update as at Tuesday 13 July from Sammy: Briggs is in ICU in Brisbane and they don’t know what is wrong still. He has increasing fluid on both lungs, partial collapse and some consolidation. He is being supported by an non-invasive ventilation mask as he cannot breathe on his own. The fluid on his heart seems to be decreasing. The doctors stopped antibiotics today because he’s been on them too long. They also stopped the steroids because there is a fungus growing in his lungs. He has a blood clot in his leg so he’s on blood thinner. They may drain some of the fluid off his lungs but need to wait for the blood thinner to wear off. He is in a diuretic to try to reduce the fluid and insulin because all of the meds have increased his blood sugars. He’s not sleeping very much even though he is exhausted from trying to breathe. Muscle wastage has taken hold and he can barely move his arms and legs. He is being fed with a tube as he struggles to eat and drink. Update as at Sun 25 July 2021. Mark has been moved back to Rockhampton Hospital, ICU. Prince Charles wanted to place him in a normal ward, despite his reliance on high flow oxygen and unstable symptoms. He had a relapse on Tuesday night where his BP dropped and they had to work very hard to stabilise him. He was sedated and ventilated again. Since, his stats have held and he’s been able to come off sedation and ventilation. They have drawn some of the fluid from outside his lungs and are having it tested. They are planning to do a labelled white cell scan on Monday to see if they can find a source of infection. Update 2nd August: He’s had a busy day. Bloods, chest X-ray, CT scan and ultrasound on his left arm. Visit from psych, dietician, docs, surgical consult and Physio. No result from chest x-ray yet, has a clot in the arm too but not sure if it’s DVT- waiting for report. Surgeon happy to hold off on doing a gastroscope to see if there is a bleed in the stomach because bloods aren’t indicating even though stools are black and there’s fluid in his abdomen(ct). If his third lot of EBV tests come back negative, they will look at sending him to Brisbane for a PET scan. Currently consulting with Infectious disease doc here, immunologist and respiratory specialist at Prince Charles and haematologist at Royal Brisbane. Have to wait for a couple of tests to come back to see what will happen next. Update 3rd August 2021 Boofhead got his nasal tube tangled and partially pulled it out. They had to reset it and check it with an X-ray overnight. It wasn’t secured properly and had started coming out again when I arrived this morning so they have just reset it and sent him for another X-ray. If his EBV test comes back negative tomorrow, they want to send him to Brisbane for a PET scan and immunologist consult. Obviously going to Brissy right now is not ideal because of the risk of Covid and I won’t be allowed in with him. We are asking to go to Townsville instead. They are not keen but we will find out tomorrow. He’s still having ongoing fevers etc and they have no idea why. There’s 250ml of fluid outside his left lung again and collapse at the bases of his lungs. The clot in his arm is superficial and not DVT at this stage. Abdomen fluid and heart fluid seem to be reducing. He is now off all antibiotics. He still has a rash all over. His eating has gone backwards as he keeps choking. A couple of things to be investigated.

Sun 15th August 2021 Briggs has been taken by the retrieval team this morning. I will fly at 4:55 this arve with Boney. His HR and BP came down overnight but went back up this morning. I’ll fill you in when I find out more. He’s settling in. His nasal gastric came out again so he was distressed at having another one put in. The hospital here was confused as to why he was transported to coronary instead of ICU. He is now in their ICU as he needs more care than the coronary unit could provide. They have found a mitochondrial leak in his heart which they are concerned about and looking at putting a tube down to look inside at what is happening to his heart. The doc has been going through his chart for over 3 hours and said there was not a lot of useful info. They will be repeating some of the tests including bone marrow biopsy. He is currently being referred to a number of specialists. Not a lot more they could tell us tonight other than they can see that he is really sick.

Update Saturday 14th August 2021 He had an episode overnight where he was coughing and gagging which then caused a significant drop in his HR and BP. He’s now in AF and his HR and BP are high again. They are now looking at transporting him to the Wesley. Sammy is unable to accompany Mark with the RFDS. She'll be doing a commercial flight. Still in Rockhampton ICU. No transport available today so they are hoping tomorrow. Doc is keen to get him to Brissy while he is stable enough to travel and he thinks the window is short. He has a high BP, HR and irregular heart rhythm. Temps have been good all day and his white cell count and kidney function has improved.

Update 13th August 2021 Mark was back on hi-flow today because he breathing improved (still significant support but less than bipap). His BP has remained really high today and they have tried numerous drugs to get it down. Unsuccessfully. Heart rate and Sats have remained steady. Brisbane is off the cards until he is a little more stable. Maybe by the end of the weekend or early next week.

Update 12th August 2021 He was extubated today because he was doing well. He went backwards tonight and is on high level BP meds and bipap (heavy breathing support). They haven’t been able to get him stable yet.

10 August 2021 He’s crashed again so he’s back in ICU. They intubated again at 2:20am because he could no longer breathe for himself. Waiting to see how he’s going.? Next update is from very good friends who have been solid rocks for the Briggs family. Boney and I are up at the hospital, Sammy is hopefully getting some much needed sleep. He's well sedated and on BP meds to keep his blood pressure up as well as intubated. Dr T#& is reviewing everything now and they'll do a broncoscopy (camera to the lungs) this morning. Unlikely to be allowed in to see him before 11am. Another update was a message to the family from a caring unknown person on Facebook. See the photo. Next update from Sammy: Briggs is doing okay. He’s on a lot of meds again to keep him as stable as they can. He is septic again. We are waiting for an ICU bed to open in Brissy before he can be transferred. ICU is harder to get into and with the Covid isolation, they are short on staff. They’re still hoping it’ll happen in the next 24hours. Next update.. Briggs has responded really well to the antibiotics and things are looking good today. He’s off the BP meds and they were trying to extubate him today. He wasn’t quite breathing consistently enough on his own so now tomorrow is the plan. He is off sedation and having some responses to us. They are looking to get him back to ward before trying to send him to Brisbane so it won’t be for a few days now.

9 August 2021 Nothing new condition wise. He’s still struggling to breathe, high BP HR and temps. They’re still diuresing him even though some twit gave him fluids again last night. They started a different antibiotic today. Paramedics came to transport him to the RFDS at 6:30 but there was a mix up in communication and Royal Brissy doesn’t have a bed for him. He will go as soon as it can be arranged.

8 August 2021 He’s still struggling to breathe, having temps, high BP and heart rate. Tried to explain that while his oxygen sats are ok, his work effort has increased and can’t be sustained. They didn’t listen. Had 4 different docs see him because his stats were so high. None of them did anything new other than increase the acceptable levels before the doctor gets called for review/treatment. In stubborn Briggs style, he reached the new increased level and the doc had to be called anyway. They still did nothing. He was on one hour obs due to stat level but they changed it to four hourly so he can get some rest. Not sure if it’s for him or for them. Very frustrating day.

Update 7th August He had a shower and a walk today. Breathing support has been turned up because he wasn’t maintaining his SATS. BP, HR and temps continued going up and down. He was sent for another chest X-ray due to the changes in breathing. He’s coughing and choking more tonight. I also found a large swollen area on his lower back when giving him a shower so he will have an ultrasound on Monday. He’s had some chest pain and the troponin levels are positive again showing some heart stress again. Further update.. He has hospital acquired pneumonia and some heart failure. They’re starting him on antibiotics and a BP med. Hold on to your seats?

Update 7th August 2021 He’s deteriorated a little today. He has fluid at the top of his lungs so breathing is harder today. He also has swelling in his legs and arms. They’ve started a diuretic to reduce fluid. He had fluid overnight though because he’s dehydrated. He’s also had some chest pain this morning. Temps, BP and HR still going up and down. Very tired as they were doing obs every hour overnight. Filled him in about the awesome event last night?
